چکیده

Full and partial immersion in virtual reality are fundamental different user experiences: partial immersion supports the feeling of “looking at” a virtual environment while full immersion supports the feeling of “being in” that environment (Shneiderman 1998:221-222). Working with a range of different interactive virtual reality applications using different display systems we have found that the use of six-sided caves and panoramic displays result in different requirements to the design of interaction techniques and use of interaction devices. These requirements can be closely related to specific categories of interaction: orientating, moving and acting. We also found, that existing virtual reality applications often have very little in common when it comes to interaction techniques and does not take into consideration the implications of the display type used. In this paper I present a conceptual framework for the design of interaction techniques for virtual reality focusing on the relations between interaction techniques and display types.

A CAVE Based 3D Immersive Interactive City with Gesture Interface

3D city models have greatly changed the way we interact with geographic information. However, both the visualization and interaction are limited on conventional 2D displays. This paper presents a system that visualizes 3D cities and supports gesture interaction in a fully immersive Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE). The proposed system utilizes gestures to control navigation, selection,...

Immersive Projection Technology for Visual Data Mining

The PlatoCAVE, the MiniCAVE, and the C2 are immersive stereoscopic projectionbased virtual reality environments oriented toward group interactions. As such they are particularly suited to collaborative efforts in data analysis and visual data mining. In this article, we provide an overview of virtual reality in general, including immersive projection technology, and the use of stereoscopic disp...

A Succinct Overview of Virtual Reality Technology Use in Alzheimer’s Disease

We provide a brief review and appraisal of recent and current virtual reality (VR) technology for Alzheimer's disease (AD) applications. We categorize them according to their intended purpose (e.g., diagnosis, patient cognitive training, caregivers' education, etc.), focus feature (e.g., spatial impairment, memory deficit, etc.), methodology employed (e.g., tasks, games, etc.), immersion level,...

Référentiels Spatiaux des Tâches d'Interaction et Caractéristiques de l'Utilisateur influençant la Performance en Réalité Virtuelle

In virtual reality, to adapt interfaces to users, two dimensions must be studied: the task and the user. The first dimension deals with interaction tasks in virtual reality, more precisely manipulation and locomotion. The study and the comparison of spatial properties of virtual and real environments allow us to propose tasks hierarchical models which show problematical interaction situations f...

The Effects of Fully Immersive Virtual Reality on the Learning of Physical Tasks

Fully immersive virtual settings are different from traditional virtual reality settings in that they are able to capture full body motion. This ability allows people to use their full range of physical motion to interact with other avatars, computer controlled agents, and objects in the virtual environment. As such, fully immersive virtual reality presents a novel mediated learning environment...
